2023 Mercy Award Winner Announced

(Left to Right): Stephen Plemmons, Senior Nursing Executive, Missi Bowman, Mercy Award 2023 Winner, LaCrystal Gordon, Interim Market CNO, Ashley Hindman, Interim CEO

Harris Regional and Swain Community Hospital recently announced that Missi Bowman has been recognized as the facility’s 2023 Mercy Award winner. The Mercy Award recognizes one employee from each of Lifepoint Health’s facilities who profoundly touches the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded.

The Mercy Award is an annual recognition program that honors the life and contributions of Scott Mercy, Lifepoint’s founding chairman and chief executive officer. The award is considered the highest honor a Lifepoint employee can receive.

“At Harris and Swain, we share Lifepoint’s commitment to making communities healthier, and we recognize this is supported by the good work and service of our employees on and off the job,” said Ashley Hindman, Interim CEO of Harris and Swain Hospitals. “We are extremely proud to recognize Missi for her efforts on behalf of our patients and our community. She goes above and beyond each and every day to ensure that every person she encounters receives the highest level of care and compassion.”

Missi has been employed as a registered nurse at our hospitals since 2017. She came to us as new graduate and nursing leadership quickly determined she was an invaluable asset to our healthcare team. Missi’s passion and her desire to learn and grow in the nursing field was evident. Within a year of hire she was selected as recipient of the Daisy Award after receiving a touching nomination for the compassionate care she provided for a Hospice patient and providing much needed reassurance for the family members during this very difficult time.

Missi was nominated by Heather Wilkes, RN at Harris and Swain. Heather shared, “Missi consistently goes above and beyond her everyday duties as an ICU nurse. Besides having an exceptional eye for detail, wonderful work ethic, and often being the first person in the door and the last one to leave, she has chosen to also work as one of the founders of the Forensics Nursing program. She has taken it upon herself to undertake specialized training and education to create a program that is somewhat unusual in WNC, that gives evidence and a voice to victims of violence and varying degrees of assault. She often finds herself on call in the evenings before she’s scheduled to work a regular ICU shift, and she consistently exhibits a high work ethic in all she does the next day. She takes on students, works as charge, and has a passion for education and furthering programs that make our community better.”

Each facility winner, including Missi, will be considered for Lifepoint’s 2023 companywide Mercy Award. The companywide winner will be announced this summer and honored during a ceremony in Nashville, Tenn., in August.
