The Western Carolina University Board of Trustees approved modifications to their existing alcohol beverage policy at their July meeting. The change will now allow alcohol sales at regulated areas during home football games this fall. The regulated area is known as Catamount Corner which is set aside for members of the Catamount Club who are the biggest donors to the booster club. This action is not connected to the legislation passed at the state level recently which allows institutions the liberty to sell alcoholic beverages at sporting events. Most North Carolina institutions are developing policies for beverage control including the cut off times for selling alcoholic beverages at games. NC State, U-N-C Chapel Hill, and East Carolina have all agreed to implement the sales. U-N-C Pembroke is the only institution that has voted not to participate. Board Chairman Don Metzer stated the feeling was alcohol sales would send the wrong message to the community.
