The Nantahala Ranger District is planning to conduct two prescribed burns in Macon County this week to reduce fuels within the understory of the forest to help reduce the risk of wildfires.
On Wednesday, March 2, the 1,025-acre Split White Oak burn will take place in the Nantahala Community and use a helicopter. This is a one-day burn with no planned closures.
On Thursday, March 3, the 1,107-acre Hickory Branch burn will also take place in the Nantahala Community and use a helicopter. The London Bald trail and the Junaluska trail are within the burn unit and will be closed for the day.
The public should be aware of smoke and firefighter traffic in the area.
