Heavy Rains Cause Flooding In Jackson and Surrounding Areas

Heavy rains and flood warnings for the area prompted local emergency management in Jackson County to call for a State of Emergency on Thursday, May 27th, 2022. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg issued a Flash Flood Warning for Jackson County in western North Carolina and the surrounding areas through Friday at 12:45pm. Between 3 and 4 inches of rain had fallen causing river banks to overflow. Jackson County Schools Closed for Friday and Swain County Schools operated on a two hour delay. Duke Energy, who controls many of the headwaters of the Tuckasegee River began aggressively moving water through the lake system on Thursday, May 26th, to prepare for the rain event, which was predicted by our meteorologists and the National Weather Service to include potentially 4-6 inches of rain from Thursday through Friday morning. Some Webster residence experienced water coming within inches of their homes.
