Man Pleads Guilty to B&E in Jackson County

An Asheville man who broke into a house two years ago on Old Cullowhee Road, terrifying two women who hid in a bedroom as he snatched and stole various items, has pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree burglary and felony larceny.
William Dewayne Meadows, 29, is now in the N.C. Department of Corrections serving a 34-53 month active sentence, Christina Matheson, the assistant district attorney in Jackson County for District Attorney Ashley Hornsby Welch, said this week.
Matheson said Meadows, gun in hand, smashed his way into the house at about 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 10, 2018. He was searching for marijuana that belonged to a resident not then at home.
A co-defendant, Gerardo Cruz Jr., later told officers that Meadows and another, still unidentified, suspect both held him at gunpoint and forced him to drive to the house. Once inside the residence, Meadows stole a leather purse and wallet, among other items.
Meanwhile, Jackson County Deputy R.E. Porter responded to a 911 emergency call from the two women hiding in the house. He saw a car with the suspects inside and gave chase. Cruz lost control of his vehicle and wrecked. While Cruz stayed inside the car, the other two men fled, but Meadows was caught and arrested.
In addition to an active prison sentence, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Bradley B. Letts ordered Meadows to pay court fees.
