Public safety agencies from across Western North Carolina and beyond are gearing up for the second annual Hometown Heroes Career Fair at Southwestern Community College (SCC). The event, scheduled for April 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on SCC’s Jackson Campus, aims to honor frontline workers while providing career opportunities in military, law enforcement, fire, medical first response, and emergency and disaster response fields.
Last year’s inaugural event featured an impressive display of life-saving equipment, including military vehicles, fire trucks, emergency response units, and law enforcement gear. Aircraft flyovers were planned but were impacted by unfavorable weather conditions, which forced much of the event indoors. Organizers are now preparing for an even larger event this year, with hopes for clear skies to allow for all scheduled outdoor activities.
Even if weather conditions prove challenging, SCC has developed contingency plans to ensure this year’s career fair surpasses the success of the previous one. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with representatives from all branches of the U.S. Military, as well as local and regional fire, law enforcement, rescue, and emergency response teams. These professionals will showcase the equipment and vehicles used in their daily operations and provide information about career pathways in their respective fields.
The event serves as both a tribute to public safety professionals and a recruitment opportunity for individuals interested in these essential careers. For those looking to join the ranks of first responders and emergency personnel, Hometown Heroes provides a direct connection to potential employers and training programs.
For more details about Hometown Heroes, including an up-to-date list of participating employers, interested individuals are encouraged to visit SCC’s website or contact the college’s Career Services department.
