Karen Proctor has been a cornerstone of the Swain County Chamber of Commerce for 19 years, leading major events and contributing to the community’s growth. Though she has taken a new job, she remains involved as a chamber board member.
A Swain County native, Proctor takes pride in her role in the county’s economic development. Under her leadership, Bryson City gained recognition as a premier outdoor destination, and events like Downtown Trick or Treat and Freedom Fest have grown significantly. She also played a key role in town improvements, including historic preservation projects and partnerships that enhanced tourism.
Proctor’s departure marks a transition for the chamber, with Ricky Sanford stepping in as the new administrative coordinator. With a background in community service and a passion for local engagement, Sanford aims to maintain and expand the chamber’s impact. The board is shifting toward a more community-driven approach, encouraging greater involvement from local businesses.
A new chamber office at 1191 Main Street will be open to the public on select weekdays, and monthly meetings are held at the Swain County Business Center. Chamber president Monica Brown emphasizes the importance of member participation in shaping future programs and events.
