The Twins are set to call up their top pitching prospect, Zebby Matthews, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Matthews will step into an injury-riddled rotation and is expected to make his MLB debut the first time he takes the mound. Since Matthews is not yet on the 40-man roster, the Twins will need to make a corresponding move to officially select his contract. Last week, Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey mentioned that Matthews was a strong candidate for a major league call-up following Joe Ryan’s Grade 2 teres major strain, which could potentially sideline Ryan for the rest of the season. The Twins currently have their starter for Tuesday listed as TBD. Matthews has made significant strides this season, climbing to the No. 61 spot on Baseball America’s updated top 100 prospects list, where he is noted for having possibly the best command in minor league baseball. Additionally, Keith Law ranks Matthews as the 60th best prospect in the sport, while MLB.com places him at No. 100.
