A Heartfelt Song: Phillip Lammonds’ “Why Don’t Dogs”

Country music artist Phillip Lammonds, whom I recently had the pleasure of interviewing, has unveiled his latest single, “Why Don’t Dogs.” The song is a poignant reflection on the enduring bond between humans and their canine companions. Co-written with the talented Kevin Mack, it explores a profound question: why do our beloved pets have such short lifespans?

Inspired by personal experiences and a shared spiritual connection, Lammonds and Mack crafted a heartfelt ballad that resonates with anyone who has ever loved a dog. The song’s lyrics present a series of “why” questions, exploring the mysteries of life and the bittersweet nature of loss.

“It’s kind of that, you know, your heart’s gonna get broke up front,” Lammonds admits. “And it’s that, and… you just really, you put a lot of your personal emotions into their little, you know, into their little movement.”

Lammonds himself is a lifelong dog lover, currently sharing his home with a Springer Spaniel named Muddy and a mischievous Beagle named Ruby. His deep affection for his pets is evident in his heartfelt storytelling and the raw emotion conveyed in “Why Don’t Dogs.”

As listeners connect with the song’s poignant message, they are reminded of the unconditional love and companionship that dogs offer. “Why Don’t Dogs” is a testament to the enduring bond between humans and their furry friends, a bittersweet reminder of the joys and sorrows that come with such a special relationship.

A Future Single: “Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong”

Phillip Lammonds is gearing up to release his next single, “Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong,” sometime this fall. It’s a song he penned years ago while first starting out in Nashville. Inspired by the complexities of relationships and the role alcohol can play in them, the song offers a poignant narrative that resonates with many.

“It’s really sort of explaining, or at least not necessarily explaining as much as narrating, the context of relationships that just can’t seem to get to the finish line,” Lammonds explains. “Or they get to the finish line too soon, whatever.”

A Grand Old Opry Debut

Earlier this year, Phillip Lammonds achieved a significant milestone by making his debut at the Grand Ole Opry. The experience was both exhilarating and humbling for the rising country star.

“It was the most authentic resignation I’ve ever had,” Lammonds recalls. “I mean, it’s pretty like this. It was the most authentic drive I ever had, to anywhere, to do anything, because I just knew. I didn’t believe it until I got there, but I just didn’t believe until I got there.”

The performance was a surreal experience for Lammonds, filled with a mix of nerves and disbelief. He was honored to share the stage with country music legends like Vince Gill and Don Schlitz.

Reflecting on His Debut Album: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Phillip Lammonds’ debut album, released earlier this year, marked a significant turning point in his career. Inspired by the experiences of other artists who had delayed releasing their albums, Lammonds decided to take a proactive approach.

With the support of his best friend and executive producer, Lammonds recorded the album live with a full band. The process was a rewarding one, allowing him to showcase his musical talents and connect with his fans on a deeper level.

A Song Inspired by Friendship

One of the standout tracks on Lammonds’ album is “Coffee, Black.” This song was inspired by a conversation with a friend who had always encouraged Lammonds to pursue his songwriting dreams.

“He’d always give me an idea, song ideas, and, you know, being a songwriter,” Lammonds recalls. “One day, he said, ‘I’ve got one that you have to pay attention to.’ And it was the song. Title was ‘Fried Baloney, Mustard Only.’”

Years later, while writing “Coffee, Black,” Lammonds remembered his suggestion and incorporated it into the song. The experience was a poignant reminder of the lasting impact that friendships can have on our lives.
