Swain High School Graduation Announcement

After significant planning, following guidance provided by the Office of the Governor, the Department of Public Instruction and with guidance from our School Board Attorney; Swain County High School will hold graduation for the class of 2020 on Saturday June 6. With the safety and well being of our students and their families in mind, and keeping with state mandates, our graduation ceremony will be very different from our traditional graduation. We have gone to great lengths to include as many elements from traditional graduation as is safely possible.

Our staff has faced unprecedented challenges in planning graduation this year.  While we understand that this is far from an ideal situation, we hope that our community understands the difficulties and restrictions that we have faced in planning a ceremony that will honor the class of 2020 in the best way possible.  We sincerely hope that we can count on our community to help us make this day as memorable as possible for our seniors.

Graduation will be held at Swain Memorial Stadium while adhering to the maximum gathering limit of 25 people as stated in Executive Order 141 (https://files.nc.gov/governor/documents/files/EO141-Phase-2.pdf) and follow-up guidance

https://files.nc.gov/governor/documents/files/Phase-2-FAQ.pdf.

It is extremely important to note that ALL of the Class of 2020 Graduation Ceremony will be covered LIVE, free of charge, on the Maroon Devils Network.  So families who cannot attend with their graduate can see the graduation LIVE on the Network.  As always we will have a complete edited version of graduation later in the summer for a cost of $10 on Blu-Ray or DVD.

At 8:00 am, Graduation speeches will be performed at the stadium and will be attended by school administration. Honorary speakers will be Valedictorian, Elijah Bassett, Salutatorian, Kierra Shook, Student led prayer.   . All will be appropriately Social distanced. These students will be the first four graduates.

Diploma presentations and senior accolades will take place on the field. Graduates will be given   The chairs will be sanitized between each presentation.

After the family members and friends assemble, the graduate will be called to the podium to receive their diploma and will officially be graduated by announcement and as they move their tassel. The graduate and their entourage will then return to their cars and exit the track.

After the first four graduates, a staggered time of entrance will be followed for the remaining graduates after the honor speakers.  Going by the graduates LAST name, we will go by the following schedule:  Last name A to Cook 8-10 am; Last Name Cooly to Holt 10-12 am; Last Name Hornbuckle to Myers 12-2 pm; Last Name Nations to Stover 2-4 pm; Last Name Taylor-Zavala 4-5 pm.

An alternate plan is being developed and will be released at a later date in the event of inclement weather on June 6th.
