Swain County athletes participate in the Body Armor state soccer games

Representing Swain County at the under Armor State Soccer Games on the West Boys team was Zachery Cline and Landon Mantz. The team was coached by Bandy’s Rick Lester and Fil Wilkinson.  The team won the Bronze medal on Sunday after completing the regulation tied at two. In overtime the West team won on penalty kicks. Half of the players on the team were from public schools and half from charter schools.

In girls action Swain County had three players including Isabelle Green, Anna Gray, and rising high schooler Karena Cline who was added to the roster due to other players not being able to participate. Swain’s Scott Cline and Hendersonville’s Kayla Lindsey coached the West girls team which was comprised of traditional public school players. In the first game Saturday the West team faced North which was make up of players from the Research Triangle area. The game ended in a two to two tie. In this game Swain’s Isabelle Green sustained a tournament ending injury. Later Saturday West faced the South team with players from the Greensboro area, that game ended in a one to one tie. On Sunday the West team beat the East team three to two which qualified them for the Gold/Silver medal game. The West had an early two to one lead then had to wait out a long rain delay after which the East team defense did now allow any additional goals while the West team was stung by two goals and thus losing three to two. The West team finished with a Silver medal. Coach Cline was happy with the effort of the West team playing against players who, “are getting ready to play at the Division 1 level. Overall we had a really good showing”
