SCC debate series shifts from national campaign to local issues

Madison Cawthorn (foreground) and Moe Davis participate in a debate on Sept. 9 at SCC.

After hosting Wednesday’s spirited debate between U.S. Congressional hopefuls Madison Cawthorn (R) and Moe Davis (D), Southwestern Community College students will turn their attention to more local issues.

In Dr. Bucky Dann’s Social Problems class, the students research issues and come up with their own questions to ask candidates for local, statewide and national offices. Next up will be the individuals running for two seats on the Jackson County Board of Commissioners.

That debate will take place at 7 p.m. on Sept. 24 on Southwestern’s Jackson Campus.

Based on the students’ performances in the national debate, Dr. Dann is confident the remaining three events will help the candidates distinguish themselves on a wide variety of issues.

“Wednesday night was the first time we’ve hosted a debate for national office, and I was extremely proud of how our students conducted themselves,” said Dr. Dann, whose classes have quizzed aspirants for statewide and local offices every two years since 2014. “We’ve already started delving into research on issues that matter most to Jackson County voters, and the topics we cover will allow all of the candidates ample opportunity to explain their positions.”

Invited to appear at the commissioners’ debate are Democrats Susan Bogardus (Dist. 3) and Mark Jones (Dist. 4); and Republicans Tom Stribling (Dist. 3) and Mark Letson (Dist. 4). Because state restrictions continue to limit indoor gatherings, this debate will be available to the public via live streaming video at: https://livestream.com/southwesterncc/jccdebate2020.

Following are the future debates, dates and candidates who’ve been invited to appear (all debates are at 7 p.m.):

  • N.C. House of Representatives, Dist. 119 (Oct. 8) – Republican Mike Clampitt and Democrat Joe Sam Queen.
  • N.C. Senate, District 50 (Oct. 22) – Republican Kevin Corbin and Democrat Victoria Fox.
