Catamount Basketball Add Kansas State Transfer

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina men’s basketball head coach Justin Gray today announced the addition of Joe Petrakis for the upcoming 2021-22 season. Petrakis, a 6’9 forward from Wichita, Kan., has two years of eligibility remaining after spending the previous season at Kansas State.
“Joe is an unbelievable young man that brings value both on and off the court,” said Gray. “He has a high IQ, high character, and can play! I really like his size and versatility and are happy to have him join our Catamount family.”

After redshirting in 2019-20, Petrakis saw action in 11 games for the Wildcats during the 2020-21 campaign. He played a season-high 15 minutes against Oklahoma State on Jan. 9 and scored a season-best six points in the 70-54 home setback against the Cowboys. Petrakis played and scored in games at Big XII champion Texas as well as both contests against Sunflower Showdown rival Kansas.

Petrakis began his collegiate career in 2018-19 at Dodge City Community College where he played in all 30 games including 12 starts. In his lone season for the Conquistadors, Petrakis averaged 4.8 assists and 3.1 rebounds and finished in double figures four times including scoring a career-high 14 points against Barton Community College.

Petrakis prepped at Valley Center HS in Wichita where he averaged 12.4 points and 10.2 rebounds as a senior. A three-year basketball letterwinner, he also lettered in soccer and golf during his prep career.
